Meet the “next generation of counselors” Supervised by Suzanne Sanford, M.Ed., LPC

Katie graduated from the University of Lynchburg with a bachelor’s degree in Psychological Science in May of 2021. She has continued her academic pursuit at the University of Lynchburg where she has completed a Master of Education in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. During her undergraduate experience, she co-conducted an IRB-approved study that observed the correlation between intrapersonal intelligence and sexual openness. She has experience as an intern working with opiate use disorders, anxiety disorders, and trauma-related disorders. The therapeutic modalities that she leans towards are person centered, and CBT, but she considers herself to be more eclectic. Her certifications include CAMS (Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality; suicide prevention and risk assessment) as well as in Child Abuse and Neglect (recognizing and reporting signs of abuse and neglect).

Katie believes that a combination of nature and nurture both heavily influence how people develop and grow. A wide range of factors affect a person’s development, including their biological predispositions as well as their environment. Recognizing that there is a relationship between the two ensures that you are looking at internal as well as external forces on a person’s behaviors and personality.

Katie has always been interested in play therapy and hopes to increase her overall counseling skills and knowledge of play therapy techniques. She hopes to provide a safe and inviting space where clients can feel comfortable and reach their therapeutic goals.

Katie provides services to children/youth of all ages and sees clients under the supervision of Suzanne Sanford, LPC. She is working toward licensure as a Professional Counselor in the state of Virginia.

John will be with us through May 14th

As a Graduate Student Intern at Find Your Way Counseling, John looks forward to deepening his understanding of play therapy and refining his counseling skills in a hands-on, supportive environment. While he has extensive experience working with older adolescents, he is eager to expand his practice to include younger adolescents and children.

John leans toward Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Systemic Therapy in his approach but remains enthusiastic about exploring and integrating new therapeutic modalities. His ultimate goal is to create a safe, welcoming space where children feel free to express themselves and work toward meaningful therapeutic growth.

Megan earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in addictive behaviors from Nicholls State University in Louisiana in May 2023. She is currently pursuing her Master of Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Liberty University.

Megan’s passion for supporting children and adolescents began early through extensive volunteer work in her church community. During her undergraduate studies, she expanded this passion into professional roles within the school system, serving as a day care worker, assistant teacher, and head substitute teacher for grades K–5 in both public and private settings. These experiences strengthened her understanding of children’s developmental needs and deepened her commitment to serving young people with care and intention.

As she entered her graduate program, Megan gained additional experience working with children and adults with special needs. These opportunities further fueled her desire to learn effective, developmentally attuned approaches to care. Her interest in play therapy grew naturally from this work, as she witnessed how children communicate, process, and heal through play.

Megan joined Find Your Way Counseling & Play Therapy, Inc. to gain practical, hands on experience through both her internship and future Residency. She was drawn to the practice’s strong foundation in child centered play therapy (CCPT) and its commitment to honoring each child’s unique voice, pace, and inner world. She is eager to learn the CCPT model in depth, believing that understanding a child’s natural language of play—and listening with presence and respect—can foster meaningful growth and healthier living.

While much of her background centers on work with children, Megan is also open to supporting adolescents and adults. She is passionate about helping individuals grow into the person they aspire to be and supporting healing from life’s challenges across the lifespan.

Megan believes that positive change occurs within safe, trusting therapeutic relationships. She values creating environments grounded in genuineness, acceptance, compassion, and empathy, where clients can explore past, present, and future concerns at their own pace. In her clinical work, she often leans into Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT) and remains committed to expanding her skills across additional theories and techniques to meet each client’s unique needs.

She looks forward to continuing her personal and professional growth at Find Your Way Counseling & Play Therapy so she can serve her clients with competence, humility, and care—now and throughout her career.

Megan sees clients in the office on Wednesdays. She begins Internship Wednesday April 1, 2026. Upon graduating in December of this year, she will continue with us as a Resident in Counseling.
